INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the C-OIL project has been to generate scientific knowledge that allows the development of a methodological framework based on hybrid downscaling techniques (numerical and statistical) for the analysis of the danger of oil spills in the coastal strip, with the aim of improving prevention and response systems to accidental pollution.

As a result of the project, considerable progress has been made in the research and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to the modeling of high-resolution currents at coastal and local scales and their use in marine pollution, especially for accidental spill prevention and response. The project brings new techniques based on AI/machine learning, demonstrating its potential in terms of accuracy, computational efficiency and scalability. The results of the project will contribute to the prevention systems against accidental pollution in the marine environment, contributing to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 14) and to a safer and more environmentally friendly maritime transport.
